A king or a cal king will work. The standard king mattress is 76" wide by 80" long. That would give your husband 4 inches at the foot of the bed. A cal king is 72" inches wide by 84" inches long, giving your husband 8" at the foot of the bed.
I'm 6' 4" and a queen(which is the same length as a king) is barely long enough, I have to sleep with my head against the headboard... definitely go with the Cal King which is what I will be purchasing.
